The Solar Decathlon challenges the next generation of building professionals to design high-performance, low-carbon buildings powered by renewable energy, promoting student innovation, STEM education, and workforce development opportunities in the buildings industry. The Solar Decathlon’s Design Challenge is a one- to two-semester, design-only competition. Housed in the newly-renovated UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios in Culver City and led by a faculty of internationally-recognized artists, the Art M.F.A. program challenges students to work intensively within and across multiple areas of study to develop innovative and sustainable art practices.

Preparation for the Major
Across degree pathways, students will study graphic design, concept development, typography, motion graphics, packaging design, user-centered design, visual art writing, art direction, color theory, photography, printmaking, and advertising. Students will also have the opportunity to complete an internship at a local or national company. The Design Media Arts (DMA) undergraduate program emphasizes innovative creation with digital and mass media within the context of a public research university. The curriculum features a solid foundation in form, color, space, motion, typography, and interactivity, followed by a broad selection of area studies courses in video, visual communication, network media, game design, and narrative. The program culminates with the Senior Projects classes where each student defines their own senior project based on individual interests within the areas of interactivity and games, video and animation, and visual communication and image. Students will also complete a number of graphic design projects with direction and advice from real clients.

The Graphic Design Program at San Jose State University (SJSU) was established in 1969.
